Systematic diagnosis of halitosis

  • Comprehensive anamnesis (medical history)
  • Measurement of volatile sulphur compounds using a halimeter
  • Assessment of mouth odour strength, also to gauge subsequent outcome of therapy
  • Analysis of odour source
  • Dental examination
  • With sources of odour outside the oral cavity an examination by a specialist may be required (e.g. otolaryngologist, gastroenterologist, internist)

Halitosis treatment options

  • Professional dental cleaning
  • Instructions on improving oral hygiene, especially spaces between the teeth as well as the tongue
  • Periodontal treatment<7li>

The practice is highly specialised in the treatment of halitosis (bad breath) by Dr Giedre Matuliene and Dr Jens Thomsen. Over 25% of the population suffer from it at least occasionally.

The cause of bad breath is more than 90% located in the oral and nasopharyngeal zone and is usually caused by decomposition processes. Certain factors contribute to this process. These include: reduced salivation, breathing through the mouth, snoring, poor diet, using certain medications, infections as well as fasting and stress.

Among the main reasons for halitosis are volatile sulphur compounds, which may occur due to inflamed gums, tooth decay, periodontitis or poorly fitting dentures. Stress may also play a further major role.

For diagnosis purposes the halimeter creates a breath record, in order to determine whether the cause of the halitosis is inside or outside the oral cavity. The tongue coating index also shows which areas of the tongue are affected by coating. This provides another important indication of how the treatment is proceeding.

Practice quality is certified (DIN ISO 9001/2008) and the only treatment programmes provided are those that are based on many years of experience and have proven themselves when applied.
