The specialist in shoulder surgery Dr. Daniel Briem is a senior lecturer, surgeon, orthopaedist, orthopaedic surgeon and physician for specific trauma surgery.
The focus of his work is on injuries and disorders of the shoulder, which also includes shoulder surgery related sport traumatology and degenerative wear and tear symptoms of the shoulder.
No other large joint has seen so many new treatment options in a comparatively short time as compared with the shoulder. Minimal-invasive techniques especially have undergone constant development and have rapidly extended the operative range of shoulder surgery and the possibilities for patients to recover properly.
Shoulder diagnostics are carried out at the modern Hanse Chirurgie practice in Hamburg-Eppendorf, in which injuries and disorders such as impingement, calcific tendonitis of the shoulder or frozen shoulder are treated with great precision and by devoting time to each individual patient. What is important is the integrated aftercare of treated shoulder injuries. This is what our physiotherapy team provides in close collaboration with the doctors.
Hanse Chirurgie is able to provide an exceptionally high standard of quality due to various factors – our doctors’ many years of experience, external quality assurance (DIN EN ISO 9001:2000) plus ongoing scientific analysis of the operation results to optimise outcomes.
Hanse Chirurgie has various offices in Hamburg: Eppendorf, Bergedorf, Eidelstedt and Altona.

FREQUENT CAUSES OF SHOULDER PAIN- Impingement of the shoulder
Impingement means a symptom of tightness that is noticed with certain movements. Pain occurs frequently with overhead movements and disturbed sleep with the patient waking when lying on the affected shoulder. If no tendon damage has been diagnosed, conservative treatment is advised. An operation is only required if conservative treatment fails or if there is secondary tendon damage. This intervention is conducted using a keyhole technique (arthroscopy).
- Calcific tendinitis of the shoulder
The condition known as calcific tendinitis of the shoulder can be divided into three stages. At the absorption stage especially the disorder is very painful. However, it responds well to conservative measures with cortisone injection and the administration of an NSAR agent. Shockwave treatment can be conducted with very good results. If conservative treatment is still unsuccessful, remaining calcific deposits can be removed arthroscopically.
- Frozen shoulder
Frozen shoulder is a comparatively frequent inflammatory disease of the shoulder that affects middle-aged women especially. It occurs in three stages. Treatment is carried out stage by stage. With low or no pain, physiotherapy is prescribed; with serious symptoms a course of oral cortisone is advised. An arthroscopic capsule solution is appropriate in exceptional cases.
RANGE OF TREATMENTS - Decompression for impingement syndrome (subacromial constriction syndrome)
- Shockwave treatment for calcific tendonitis of the shoulder (tendinosis calcarea)
- Reconstruction with acromioclavicular joint blast
- Osteosynthesis with a break of the humerus and collarbone
- Reconstruction following a rupture (tear) of the rotator cuff
- Stabilisation following luxation (dislocation) of the shoulders
- Joint replacement operation (endoprosthetics) with osteoarthritis
- Frozen shoulder treatment (adhesive capsulitis)
- Physiotherapy to restore mobility
